Gateshead business becomes sweet sensation

Bonnebon Confectionary Co. is on a mission to provide the best tasting confectionary at the best prices.

The small confectionary business started by owner Simon was a result of accidentally ordering a large batch of sweets and deciding to resell them. This experience, combined with Simon's previous work in the supermarket and retail sectors, felt like the right opportunity to start a business that matched his interests and his desire to be self-employed.

The initial set-up of Bonnebon Confectionary Co. was supported by The Prince's Trust in 2016 through an enterprise course and a grant of £1000. The grant covered the cost of essential equipment, stock, and some marketing costs.

Recent successes post-pandemic, including going viral on TikTok, has steadily grew the business to the point it could provide Simon with an income. Seeing the potential growth of his business, Simon contacted Gateshead Council for support and to access funding. This resulted in receiving a £3000 start-up loan to expand Bonnebon's confectionary range, improve its working area, and revisit packaging and processes to cater to increased demand in the UK and internationally.

Future plans for the company include a physical presence, attending events with a dedicated stall (for example, Newcastle Comic-Con) and a regular placing at Tynemouth Market. Simon, as an avid gamer, also hopes to digitalise and gamify his Bonnebon character into a mobile game.
