Eco Utopia Landscapes was set up by John Moore in May 2023 due to his departure from Royal Mail, having worked there for 20 years.
John started thinking about setting up his own business due to fears over the cost of living crisis, rising interest rates and concerns over his future at Royal Mail. John said: "I wanted to make my own decisions that would benefit my family so I started to look into setting up my own business. It was a tough decision but ultimately I knew I wanted to make a career change and take control of my own future".
John had a background in gardening and construction and he wanted to get back into the industry. Uncertain where to start, John attended an intensive two day programme that provided him with the tools, skills and information needed to start a business in Gateshead. The course provided information on business planning, legal aspects of registering and running your business. funding finance and how to drive sales through effective marketing which enabled him to kickstart his new career goal. The Business Gateshead team of business advisors were also on hand to help John throughout his journey. Carol, one of our Business Investment Officers at Gateshead Council said: "It was a pleasure to help John achieve his goal of setting up his own business. When John got in touch with us, he didn't know where to start so we provided him with a wealth of information and support, signposting him to relevant websites and organisations that were necessary to set the business up. From concept to delivery, it's been great to see the business idea come to life and for John to have regular clients."
Now that Eco Utopia Landscapes are up and running, John said: "It's only been a few months but I've already learned so much. I know there's so much more to learn and competition in the industry but it's my first-year trading and I already have regular clients. Having my own business gives me a great work/life balance."
