Gateshead showcases World-Class innovation across Advanced Manufacturing Sector
We're celebrating the success of three global innovators based in the borough - Turntide Technologies, Petards Group and Komatsu UK.
Gateshead' is at the heart of the North East's advanced manufacturing sector, with businesses in the borough leading on everything from sustainable transport to defence solutions and heavy engineering.
At Team Valley, Turntide Technologies has recently expanded its production facility, bringing together its Energy Storage (batteries and battery management systems) operation from Sunderland and its Thermals (fans, motors and pumps) business from Cramlington, creating a single, more efficient site in Gateshead.
A global leader in electric motors, power electronics and energy storage solutions, Turntide is set to supply next-generation LFP batteries, designed to be smaller and more powerful than traditional lithium-ion models. The innovation comes as Hitachi Rail prepares to build the UK's first new battery intercity (tri-mode) trains for Arriva's Grand Central and Angel Trains.
Councillor Leigh Kirton, Cabinet member for Economy and Communications recently visited the three companies to see first-hand how they are driving growth, sustainability and world-leading technological advancements.
Councillor Kirton said: "It is fantastic to see Gateshead being home to world-leading innovation that Turntide have demonstrated, a testament to the North East's Advanced Manufacturing sector, especially in the growing electrification arena."
Petards Group, another Team Valley business with over 40 years of history in Gateshead, specialise in rail and traffic solutions for smart city infrastructure as well as technologies in the defence sector.
Petards continued to win recognition for its innovation winning both the Automotive, Aerospace and Rail Award and the Sustainable/Ethical Manufacturer Award at the 2025 Made in the North East Awards. Petards were also shortlisted for Manufacturing Future Talent, while apprentice Logan Cook was recognised as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year.
Councillor Kirton commented: "Petards is another shining gem that Gateshead is proud to have as a long-term leader in its specialist field of Rail, Traffic and Defence solutions. They excel in the provision of products and services that enhance safety measures, with strong obligations to improving sustainable and ethical work practices."
The series of visits concluded with Komatsu UK in Birtley, who will celebrate its 40th anniversary in Gateshead in 2027, having grown into a European leader in the manufacture of heavy construction and mining equipment.
Local MP Sharon Hodgson joined the visit to the Komatsu UK site for a tour of the facilities, and was updated on all the exciting developments, including their Formula One partnership with Williams Racing.
Reflecting on the visits, Cllr Kirton said: "Gateshead is home to some of the most exciting and forward-thinking businesses in the UK and beyond. From electrification and sustainable transport to defence innovation and world-class heavy engineering, these companies demonstrate the strength of our advanced manufacturing sector. Gateshead Council is proud to support their continued growth and success."
