Dog Grooming business launches in Heworth after spotting local need
Officially launched in March 2025, Burke's Bark Dog Grooming is owned and operated by Daragh, a professionally trained groomer qualified to recognised I-Pet standards.
The idea for the business emerged when Daragh left the police service and began dog walking while considering his next steps. During this time, he repeatedly heard the same message from clients: local grooming appointments were hard to secure, with long waiting lists and very few nearby options.
Daragh said: "A huge amount of my clients said they were struggling to find a dog groomer locally that had availability. This made me think there must be room for a dog groomer in my local area."
Operating from a purpose‑built garden studio near Heworth Metro Station, Daragh has already built a loyal customer base. His typical clients include families and young couples with dogs, as well as older residents who benefit from the pick‑up and collection service, particularly helpful for those who cannot drive.
In the early stages of planning, Daragh reached out to Business Gateshead for guidance and support.
Daragh said: "When I was thinking about setting up, I contacted Business Gateshead to request information about what licence or training I would need to run a dog grooming business from my garden. I was sent everything I needed and advised on how to apply for the change of use required by the local council."
Looking ahead, Daragh has ambitious plans for the future. He hopes to continue expanding his client base, open additional premises, and eventually branch out into training new dog groomers, helping meet the growing regional demand for professional grooming services.
With strong community ties, a clear understanding of local needs, and a passion for delivering high‑quality care, Daragh's Heworth grooming studio is set to become a valued part of the area's pet‑loving community.
